Department history

In recognition of the General Command of the Jordan Armed Forces represented by the language institute, and because of the importance of languages as a means of communication among nations. Language institute was one of the first institutes in Jordan in providing a special education program in Chinese language. This Department was established in 2009, with the aim of qualifying and preparing distinguished officers in the field of Chinese language and to master its basic skills (reading, speaking, writing and listening) therefore, more than 21 courses have been held and more than 181 officers and non-commissioned officers have graduated. Where a comprehensive and detailed plan is drawn up for each course and applied in a coherent manner, ensuring that a student develops his knowledge and skills by moving smoothly from one level to another.

Courses and evaluation

Basic courses for Chinese language are held at all levels (on average twice a year), with the possibility of holding intermediate, advanced courses, and Chines language refresher course, upon request. The department receives officers from various branches of the Jordan Armed Forces - the Arab Army and the security services for a period of 23 weeks, with a total of 690 hours, at a rate of 6 study hours per day. Chinese Language Department adopts a modern and developed curriculum (the new Chinese language program) that includes the four basic skills for the level (A1-A2-B1) in addition to modern and various training methods, as well as worksheets and audio-visual materials.

Students' level of linguistic comprehension is assessed through periodic written exams, listening exams and oral exams, Also interviews to measure the student's acquisition of basic language skills that are in line with the international standard. Also, in some cases students involved in international level examinations such as Chinese proficiency test (HSK) in cooperation with Confucius Institute in Amman.

Cooperation and coordination

The aim of maintaining contact is to build bridges of communication between the department and the international institutes and to meet their needs in the field of specialization. There is close cooperation between Language institute and the Office of the Chinese Cultural Attaché in Amman, as Chinese teachers are sent to Chinese Language Department in order to contribute in the educational process and exchange experiences. There is also coordination with the (Hanban) office in Beijing, in order to review the updates that may occur in the curricula and international level examinations, and thus keeping up with linguistic and educational developments and modern education strategies.
