Departments History

In recognition of the General Command of the Jordan Armed Forces represented by the language institute, and because of the importance of languages as a means of communication among nations, The French Language Department was established in 1982. The main goal of its establishment was to allow military learners to enter a cultural, linguistic, and military environment of the Francophonie by relying on the four skills specified in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). More than 78 French language courses have been held, graduating over 1,000 officers at the Basic level, 57 officers at the advanced level, 103 officers who completed the French language course for military observers, and 31 officers who completed the French language refresher course.

Courses and assessment

The French Language Department offers courses at various levels, including basic courses (twice a year), intermediate courses, advanced courses, refresher courses, and intensive courses for military observers.

The department receives approximately 15 officers from all military branches in the Jordan Armed Forces and security services in the basic French language course for beginners for a period of 23 weeks, with a total of 690 hours, at a rate of 6 study hours per day

The department teaches the same curriculum taught at the French Cultural Center (Alter ego +) which is based on levels A1 and A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The department utilizes diverse and modern training materials, including worksheets, audiovisual materials, and listening exercises.

Students' level of linguistic comprehension is assessed through periodic written exams, listening exams and oral exams, also interviews to measure the student's acquisition of basic language skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening), which are fit with the CEFR and the Diploma in French Language (DELF) certification.

Cooperation and Coordenation

There is close coordination between the French Language Department and the Military Attaché at the French Embassy. French teachers are sent to the French Language Department to contribute and support the teaching process.

Additionally, there is coordination with the French Cultural Center in Jordan to exchange educational experiences and hold specialized workshops. The French Language Department also provides military units with translators as needed.
